VALKYRIE FINAL RELEASE DATE: DECEMBER 26TH, 2008

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures announced today they will be releasing the suspense film, VALKYRIE, from Director Bryan Singer, on Friday, December 26, 2008.

"We saw and tested the movie," says Clark Woods, President of MGM Distribution."and we believe a strong movie deserves a strong playdate."

Tom Cruise stars in the suspense thriller, VALKYRIE, based on the true story of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (CRUISE) and the daring and ingenious plot to eliminate one of the most evil criminals the world has ever known. Director Bryan Singer (THE USUAL SUSPECTS, X-MEN, SUPERMAN RETURNS) re-teams with Academy Award(R)-winning USUAL SUSPECTS screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie to bring to life the story of the men who led the operation to assassinate Hitler. The film also stars an acclaimed cast including Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Carice van Houten, Thomas Kretschmann, Eddie Izzard, Christian Berkel and Terence Stamp.

A proud military man, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg is a loyal officer who serves his country all the while hoping that someone will find a way to stop Hitler before Europe and Germany are destroyed. Realizing that time is running out, he decides that he must take action himself and joins the German resistance. Armed with a cunning strategy to use Hitler's own emergency plan -- known as Operation Valkyrie -- these men plot to
assassinate the dictator and over-throw his Nazi government from the inside. With everything in place, with the future of the world, the fate of millions and the lives of his wife and children hanging in the balance, Stauffenberg is thrust from being one of many who oppose Hitler to the one who must kill Hitler himself.

VALKYRIE is produced by Bryan Singer, Christopher McQuarrie and Gilbert Adler. McQuarrie co-wrote the original screenplay with Nathan Alexander who also serves as co-producer. The executive producers are Chris Lee, Ken Kamins, Daniel M. Snyder, Dwight C. Schar and Mark Shapiro.

The film was shot in Germany at various locations where many of the actual events occurred, including the historic Bendlerblock. Recreating the atmosphere of urgency and paranoia inside the German resistance is a team that includes Singer's frequent collaborators Newton Thomas Sigel (SUPERMAN RETURNS, X2, X-MEN) as director of photography and editor/composer John Ottman (SUPERMAN RETURNS, X2); as well as production designers Lilly Kelvert (two-time Oscar(R)-nominee for THE LAST SAMURAI and LEGENDS OF THE FALL) and Patrick Lumb (THE OMEN); and costume designer Joanna Johnston (MUNICH, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN).

VALKYRIE RESUMES FILMING IN CALIFORNIA

Stars, crews and sets for the Tom Cruise World War II drama “Valkyrie” have been spotted across the Victor Valley (California) this week.

“Tom Cruise came in and out of here almost every day,” said Terry Stover, manager of the Apple Valley Airport.

Stover said Cruise was flown in on a King Air plane, would walk down the ramp and directly onto a helicopter waiting to take him to filming in Lucerne Valley.

Residents have reported seeing tanks on the dry lake bed near Lucerne Valley High School. The area is being used to recreate Germany’s North African campaign for Cruise’s film, tracing the true story of high-ranking German officers who tried to assassinate Adolf Hitler during the height of World War II.

The Apple Valley Airport also played host to P-40 fighter planes used in the filming for several days over the last week. Stover said one was flown by John Hinton, with Planes of Fame in Chino. Stover said both the pilots and their planes refueled at the airport between filming.

Because of the aircraft involved, a temporary flight restriction was issued for a 1.5-mile radius around Lucerne, from ground level up to 3,700 feet.

“The reason for the flight restriction was to avoid any potential hazards between aircraft used in filming the movie and any other aircraft, including aircraft hired by the paparazzi,” said Ian Gregor, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

Gregor said the restriction was also to prevent damage to passing aircraft from ground effects such as pyrotechnics used during filming.

TOM DONS HIS EYEPATCH AND STARTS SHOOTING AGAIN

Tom Cruise is going back to work. No, not on a new film: He’s going to shoot the three final scenes on “Valkyrie,” the movie that began production one year ago in Germany.

Although the film has yet to be completed, several people I trust have seen “Valkyrie” and testify that it’s a superb thriller. “Bryan Singer is back in form,” says one source, referring to the “Valkyrie” director whose last film was “Superman Returns.”

Cruise will be shooting three scenes in North Africa within the next three weeks. In one, his character, Col. Claus Von Stauffenberg, is badly injured but survives, a key moment in the film’s first act.

Valkyrie opens on February 13, 2009.

MORE GREAT NEWS FOR UA AND A TIDBIT ABOUT VALKYRIE FILMING

UA has a bunch of amazing films in development and it looks as if Valkyrie will complete filming of their final desert battle scenes in June

_________________________________________________________

Talk about a surprise party.

United Artists has hired writer Charles Randolph to adapt Stanley N. Alpert's nonfiction work, "The Birthday Party."

In "The Birthday Party: A Memoir of Survival," Alpert, a former assistant U.S. attorney, describes the 25-hour kidnapping ordeal he endured in a Brooklyn apartment in 1998 the night before his 38th birthday. Randolph already has filed a draft.

Meanwhile, UA will shoot additional scenes for its second film, the Tom Cruise-starrer "Valkyrie," next month, with a February release planned. The studio has a handful of additional films nearing a greenlight and several others, including "Ranger's Apprentice" and "An Ordinary Spy."

VALKYRIE TO PREVAIL OVER NAYSAYERS

Harry Sloan and Mary Parent, heads of MGM spoke out regarding Valkyie at Cannes this week and the news is good.

As for all the bad buzz surrounding "Valkyrie," from MGM subsidiary UA, Sloan said that photos of an eyepatch-clad Tom Cruise as an SS office were "a little bit unfortunate," but were released to reassure the German government about the seriousness of the project.

MGM/UA's prepared to prevail over the nay-sayers. "We've had image problems before," Sloan said, alluding to early negativity on hits like "Casino Royale" and "Rocky Balboa." "The film will speak for itself.
