Paramount and Skydance Entertainment’s Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation is off to a record-breaking start in China, where it opened to $18.5 million on Tuesday.

That marks the biggest opening day of all time for a 2D Hollywood title, and the fifth-best of all time for a U.S. title behind 3D entires Furious 7 ($54.4 million), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($29.2 million) and fellow Paramount titles Transformers: Age of Extinction ($27.4 million) and Terminator: Genisys ($26.7 million).

Rogue Nation, starring Tom Cruise and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, has earned $511.2 million worldwide.

Mission: Impossible will likely take some of the wind out of Terminator: Genisys, which has done big business in China over the past month, grossing nearly $110 million for Paramount and Skydance.

Rogue Nation‘s opening-day take of $18.5 million is 116 percent ahead of the first-day gross of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, which earned north of $100 million in China.

Paramount and Skydance’s summer is drawing to a close with some nice bumps for their big holiday releases. Last week, both Terminator: Genisys and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation crossed $300M at the international box office. The latter has now flown over the $500M milestone worldwide with $511.2M to date. This is without China which opens on Tuesday. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol‘s final tally was $694.7M; $101M of which came from the Middle Kingdom. With expansion in that market since 2011, and a partnership with Alibaba Pictures and China Movie Channel, Rogue Nation will well outpace that (Terminator is currently at $108.8M after three China frames).

The latest installment in the Tom Cruise action series has an estimated domestic cume of $182,487,000 through Monday’s holiday. The overseas haul is $328.7M through Sunday. This weekend, it picked up another $9.4M from a total 64 territories, a 38% drop from last frame.Rogue Nation made over $150M in its first weekend of global release in late July. Internationally, it has grossed franchise-breaking numbers in Brazil, Mexico, Malaysia, Russia, Ukraine, Venezuela, India, Taiwan, the Philippines, Thailand, Sweden, Turkey, Indonesia, Poland and Hong Kong.

The well-reviewed M:I5 has come up short versus Ghost Protocol in Korea and Japan which were among that film’s best territories. Korea has been on a hot streak lately with local pictures sucking up a lot of air. The cume there is over $40M. In Japan, the Christopher McQuarrie-helmed movie has been up against Jurassic World which opened the same day last month. The film is still adding to its $36.1M cume there, picking up $1.3M in the 5th weekend of release, down 40% from the earlier frame.

Markets that continue to perform well include France which is at $18.4M after four weekends; Germany with $12.4M after five; and the UK with $31.2M after six.

McQuarrie wrote the screenplay, and wrote the story with Drew Pearce. Cruise, J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger are producers with Jake Myers executive producer.

Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions have announced that Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher 2 will arrive in theaters on October 21, 2016.

Production on the yet-to-be titled film, which is set to reunite Cruise with his The Last Samurai director Ed Zwick, is expected to kick off this November, shortly after Cruise finishes shooting the drug cartel thriller Mena with Doug Liman (Edge Of Tomorrow). In addition to Cruise, Cobie Smulders (The Avengers) was also recently reported to be in talks for a lead role.

Jack Reacher 2 is just the latest addition in to a jam-packed fall 2016 lineup as it opens against Screen Gems’ Underworld 5, two weeks after 20th Century Fox’s Gambit, one week after Columbia’s Inferno, and two weeks before Marvel’s Doctor Strange.
