There’s no going back now for the second installment of Tom Cruise’s Jack Reacher franchise

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, the sequel to the 2012 film starring Cruise as Lee Child’s literary hero, has commenced principal photography in New Orleans, Paramount Pictures and Skydance Media announced Tuesday.

Edward Zwick, who directed Cruise in The Last Samurai, is helming Never Go Back, based on the 18th book in Child’s series about a former military policeman who roams the country kicking butt and righting wrongs. Zwick adapted the screenplay with Richard Wenk and Marshall Herskovitz.

Holt McCallany and Austin Hebert are the most recent additions to the cast, which also includes Cobie Smulders, Patrick Heusinger, Danika Yrarosh, and Aldis Hodge.

Set for release Oct. 21, 2016 — one year from tomorrow — the sequel formerly known as Jack Reacher 2 was hardly a sure thing after the original received mixed reviews and grossed a middling $81 million in North America, on a $60 million budget. But the first Reacher took in $138 million overseas, where Cruise remains a strong draw, and it also performed well in ancillary markets such as home video.

After his break-out role in Bravo’s “Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce,” Patrick Heusinger is now in talks to join Tom Cruise in Paramount and Skydance’s sequel to “Jack Reacher” as the villain.

Cobie Smulders, Aldis Hodge and Danika Yarosh are also on board to join the cast with Ed Zwick directing.

Zwick and and Marshall Herskovitz wrote the most recent draft of the script after Richard Wenk penned the original draft.

Paramount grossed $218 million worldwide from 2012’s “Jack Reacher,” directed by Christopher McQuarrie from his own script based on the Lee Child series of novels. The sequel will be based on Child’s “Never Go Back,” in which Reacher travels from South Dakota to the Virginia headquarters of the U.S. Army Military Police Corps and finds that his new commanding officer has been arrested.

Details surrounding Hodge’s role are under wraps at this time, other than the character being described as “the hunter.”

Cruise and Don Granger are producing.

Besides his Bravo credit, Heusinger is a part of the series “Quantum Break,” which blurs the line between television and gaming.

His other past film credits include “A Beautiful Now,” “Black Swan” and “Frances Ha.” He is repped by Gersh and Industry Entertainment.

Paramount and Skydance’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation has rocketed past Interstellar as the highest-grossing 2D Hollywood film ever at the Chinese box office. The Tom Cruise starrer has earned $124M since it’s Middle Kingdom release on September 8; that tops the $122M Christopher Nolan’s space epic made there last year. It also marks a milestone for e-commerce giant Alibaba, whose Alibaba Pictures made its first Hollywood investment with the actioner.

The film previously had set a record as the biggest 2D opener in China with $18M. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the well-reviewed fifth installment in the series has grossed over $650M worldwide.

This has been a big year for Hollywood in China, where Universal’s Furious 7 ($380.9M) was the top-grossing film of all time until just this month, when it was unseated by local pic Monster Hunt ($385M). The record for M:I5 comes just before another local movie, Lost In Hong Kong, is due to bow on September 25 and likely set records of its own.

Around the globe, M:I5 has opened at No. 1 in the U.S., Korea, UK, Mexico, Australia, Spain, Russia, Argentina, France, Brazil and Italy, and achieved franchise-breaking numbers in Brazil, Mexico, Malaysia, Russia, Ukraine, Venezuela, India, Taiwan, Philippines, Thailand, Sweden, Turkey, Indonesia, Poland and Hong Kong.

M:I5‘s success in the Middle Kingdom is also boom for Skydance. Paramount and Skydance were the first Hollywood studios in China with two films following the “unofficial” summer blackout period that saw Chinese movies grab a bulk of real estate and admissions. While Terminator: Genisys did alright in China with $112.8M, sources have told Deadline that the film needed to clear $150M there before any quick movements were made on advancing with a sequel. HuaXia is handling distribution there. To date, worldwide, Genisys has made $440.16M and ranks as the second highest chapter in the franchise behind Terminator: Judgement Day ($519.8M).
