The new issue of Empire magazine, on sale this Thursday, features the usual deluge of movie world exclusives – among them, this never-before-seen look at Tom, in his forthcoming crime thriller American Made.

The new movie is  a (relatively) smaller story about Barry Seal, a real-life unlikely drug smuggler working for the CIA, no world-invading aliens in sight. But as his director Doug Liman explains in the new Empire, despite a smaller scale than their last collaboration in Edge Of Tomorrow, this is no quiet affair.

“Neither Tom nor I were interested in making a dry biopic,” says Liman. “Barry’s second wife collaborated and opened her files, but we cherry-picked the details we liked; Tom and I wanted to create our own version of Barry Seal. For us it was how to tell the most exciting story.”

Shooting the movie was a gonzo adventure in itself. Cruise is famed for his DIY stunts, and American Made offered him a rare chance to fly a plane solo on film for real. The idea gave producers heart palpitations, but Cruise and Liman got their way. “We had to go to some exotic locations in South America,” chuckles Liman. “We flew three hours across uninhabited rainforest to a Colombian military airstrip at the edge of rebel-controlled territory. It was so remote that Tom and I slept in tents and foraged for wood to make camp fires at night.”

After making her debut, and marrying Tom Cruise‘s Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible III, Michelle Monaghan‘s Julia Meade made a brief appearance at the end of Ghost Protocol but sat out Rogue Nation. Now, for the sixth instalment, she’ll be back with hopefully more of a role.

Writer/director Christopher McQuarrie and Cruise have been hard at work on the new film, currently known as M:I-6. While the plot has yet to be revealed (we tried breaking into the storage facility, but our rope snapped), it’ll see Hunt back in action alongside Rebecca Ferguson‘s Ilsa Faust, Simon Pegg‘s Benji Dunn, Ving Rhames‘ Luther Stickell and Alec Baldwin‘s Alan Hunley. New faces this time include Henry Cavill, Sian Brooke, Angela Bassett and Vanessa Kirby, with Sean Harris returning as villain Solomon Lane, this time securely (for how long?) imprisoned by the heroes.

Monaghan shared the news of her return on twitter, while McQuarrie posted the same image to Instagram.

Chinese moviegoers have offered a warm welcome to Tom Cruise’s horror-actioner “The Mummy.”

The movie opened to $18.7 million on Friday — the biggest first day for a Cruise movie in China.

“The Mummy” generated $20.5 million from more than 33 international markets that opened on Wednesday and Thursday. It debuted in Russia to $1.6 million and a 62% market share on Thursday for the biggest Cruise opening day ever.

It launched in Brazil with $526,000 on Thursday — also the biggest Cruise debut day in that market.

With a $125 million budget, “The Mummy” will need to perform strongly overseas to see a profit. It’s launching in 63 international markets this weekend and already saw a record opening in Korea on Monday.

“The Mummy” is expected to take in $35 million to $40 million at 4,034 North America locations in its opening weekend.

Alex Kurtzman directed “The Mummy” and Cruise plays a freelance treasure hunter who resurrects an ancient, evil Egyptian princess, portrayed by Sofia Boutella. Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance, and Russell Crowe also star in the film.

“The Mummy” launches Universal’s “Dark Universe” franchise. The studio earned $1.2 billion worldwide from its last three Mummy films from 1999, 2001, and 2008.
