One of the more awe-inspiring sequences in the movie Top Gun, which celebrates its 30th anniversary next week, occurs in its opening moments. Before Tom Cruise flashes a grin or any of the guys decide to play shirtless volleyball, we see images of Navy fighter jets gearing up for take-off and coming in for hairy twilight landings in the flight deck fog. It’s awesome, and in an exclusive clip above from the iTunes digital release of Top Gun, out today, Cruise himself talks about how awesome it was to witness in person.

“I was able to walk around. I went up to the deck and, watching these F-14s and these jets come in in the middle of the night, and seeing these guys call the ball and just right out there on the deck. And they’re just landing right in front of us and taking off, just like the opening,” Cruise recalls. “It was spectacular. You just couldn’t believe.“

Watch the clip for more. Oh, and funny coincidence: Know what F-14s were also often called? Tomcats.

Heading into the Cannes Film Festival to promote his latest buddy comedy The Nice Guys, Russell Crowe found himself amid speculation about two high-profile projects: one coming together, the other coming apart.

“I’m gonna do it,” Crowe told members of the press at a Beverly Hilton roundtable about Universal’s The Mummy, the new reboot starring Tom Cruise and directed by Alex Kurtzman, days after The Hollywood Reporter reported the move. In the film, he plays Dr. Henry Jekyll, Fellow of the Royal Society, opposite Cruise who plays a Navy Seal on a mission to root out terrorists in the Iraqi desert. Crowe counts Cruise as an old friend from when the latter was married to Nicole Kidman. “When he got a divorce I was part of the settlement package and I went to Nicole,” he joked.

The Oscar-winning actor said he was sold on the idea after a chat with Kurtzman, the screenwriter of Transformers. Currently in production, The Mummy is Kurtzman’s second directorial effort after 2012’s People Like Us. “Those kind of creative collaborative conversations, if they’re explosive like that from the first time you start talking, you’re actually into a really good place,” Crowe said of the meeting. “How they’ve pulled all of this stuff forward into a contemporary world, and how they build it out from there, and how all the other characters interweave in each other’s stories, mate, it’s fantastic.”

Crowe expressed full confidence in Kurtzman’s limited directing experience and offered a critical distinction between this iteration, targeting a June 2017 release, and the previous one starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, which collected $416 million worldwide. “This one is kind of more designed to seriously scare the shit out of you.”

Universal Pictures‘ has released the official synopsis for The Mummy reboot. Production is currently underway in London on what is intended as the first in a new interconnected cinematic Monster Universe. The synopsis follows:

Thought safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

Tom Cruise stars in the June 9, 2017 release along with Annabelle Wallis (Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur, Annabelle), Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World) and Courtney B. Vance (“American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ Simpson”). Russell Crowe (Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, Man of Steel) is reportedly in early talks to join the cast as Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde.

The Mummy is directed by Alex Kurtzman, who also produces alongside Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious series, Wanted) and Sean Daniel (The Mummy trilogy, The Best Man series). Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) wrote the screenplay, and Bobby Cohen executive produces. It’s being planned as the first film in the Universal Monster cinematic universe with plans for The Wolfman, The Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein, and Van Helsing all in various stages of development.

The original monster was made famous on the big screen by Boris Karloff in Karl Freund’s 1932 feature. Subsequent sequels to the original The Mummy saw Tom Tyler (who played Captain Marvel/Shazam in the original 1941 serials) and later Lon Chaney Jr. playing a different mummy than the one Karloff played. Stephen Sommers’ more recent The Mummy and The Mummy Returns films set Arnold Vosloo in the title role. Jet Li then played the villain in Rob Cohen’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

Russell Crowe is in talks to join Universal’s monster universe as classic literary characters Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

If a deal is made, Crowe would appear as the tormented doctor who changes into a murderous madman in The Mummy before potentially starring in his own film.

Mummy is already shooting in London with Tom, Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis and Jake Johnson.

It’s important to note that Crowe is in early talks and that any potential deal could fall apart, which has happened before for this role. Universal was in talks with Tom Hardy and that fell apart. It was then in talks with Javier Bardem, but that too went nowhere.

The storyline is set in the modern day with Tom playing a special forces soldier (or former soldier), according to sources. Wallis, one of the stars of British gangster show Peaky Blinders, will play a scientist while Boutella, who had a breakout role in Kingsman: The Secret Service, will take on the titular role. Jake Johnson is playing a member of the military.

The script calls for the appearance of Henry Jekyll, who is best known to horror aficionados as the doctor who invents a serum that allows himself to be turned into a depraved and hideous man known as Mr. Hyde. The two first appeared in the novella The Strange Tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, written by Robert Louis Stevenson, who also authored Treasure Island.

Universal already is developing movies ranging from The Bride of Frankenstein to The Creature From the Black Lagoon that would join The Mummy in this shared universe. Hyde also would be part of that universe.

(The character was already part of a Justice League of classic monsters of sorts in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, the 2003 adaptation of the Alan Moore-Kevin O’Neill comics that also included Allan Quartermain, Captain Nemo, Mina Harker and Dorian Gray, among others.)

Alex Kurtzman is directing The Mummy and producing with Chris Morgan and Sean Daniel.
