Oprah Winfrey continues to take over the world. The media mogul is back on top of Forbes’ annual “Celebrity 100 Power List,” which ranks the rich and famous based on earnings and buzz.{nl}Winfrey, who came in third last year, was the top money-maker with an estimated income of $260 million over the past 12 months. She last topped the list in 2005.{nl}”The woman is making history every single year,” said Lea Goldman, a Forbes associate editor who oversaw the list. “It’s not as if she’s sitting on her laurels enjoying the show.”{nl}Winfrey’s Harpo Productions is a partner on celebrity chef Rachael Ray’s popular syndicated daytime talk show, which debuted last September. Harpo is launching its first prime-time series, “Oprah’s Big Give,” a reality contest in which contestants compete in philanthropy, and Winfrey also produced the Broadway show “The Color Purple.”{nl}Golf tycoon Tiger Woods, who pulled in $100 million, ranks second. Madonna, absent from the list last year, is No. 3. The pop star’s “Confessions” world tour – the highest-grossing tour by any female artist in history, Goldman said – and her adoption of a baby boy in the African country of Malawi put her back in the spotlight.{nl}The Rolling Stones dropped from No. 2 to No. 4. Brad Pitt, who secured $35 million in earnings, ranks fifth – up 15 spots from last year – in part because of his status as one of the most talked-about celebrities in the world, Goldman said. (Girlfriend Angelina Jolie is No. 14.){nl}Another handsome family man, Johnny Depp, placed sixth and was the year’s highest-paid actor with his take of $92 million. Not bad for a pirate.{nl}Elton John, who earned a total of $53 million thanks to concerts and revenue from Broadway hits such as “The Lion King,” ranks seventh. Power player Tom Cruise – the world’s No. 1 star last year – slipped to No. 8.{nl}Rap mogul Jay-Z placed ninth with earnings of $83 million, leading the newly added category “Hip-Hop Impresarios.” Businessmen-rappers 50 Cent and Sean “Diddy” Combs placed 32nd and 43rd, respectively.{nl}Some guy named Steven Spielberg was No. 10.{nl}New to the “Celebrity 100”: George Clooney (40), the cast of ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” (12), Justin Timberlake (34), Keira Knightley (71), Bon Jovi (18), actor-comedian Dane Cook (89), Vince Vaughn (54) and Cate Blanchett (63).{nl}Source: Forbes

Paula Wagner is late. The new chief executive of United Artists Entertainment was due to be interviewed at 3.30pm in the studio’s headquarters in Century City, Los Angeles. But an hour has passed and she is nowhere to be seen. Suddenly she arrives. “I am so sorry,” she says, reaching out in greeting. She is immaculately dressed in a two-piece navy Valentino skirt suit, Yves Saint-Laurent tan suede boots and nude fishnet stockings. She looks, as a Hollywood producer might say, like a million dollars. This is appropriate, given her role as one of the entertainment industry’s pre-eminent executives and her long-term business partnership with the world’s biggest film star. Together with Tom Cruise, Ms Wagner recently became a director and shareholder in United Artists, the studio that was founded in1919 by Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D.W. Griffith. UA’s parent company is Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, which struck a deal with Ms Wagner and Mr Cruise to run and revive the label when the pair parted company with Paramount Pictures. “To take a brand with this legacy and bring it into the future is very invigorating,” Ms Wagner says. She is sitting behind an elegant curved black desk designed by Zaha Hadid, the Pritzker-prize winning architect. She started out as an agent in Hollywood, where a young aspiring actor called Tom Cruise became one of her first clients. She continued to represent him as he shot to international fame through films such as Top Gun. Then, in 1993, the pair formed Cruise/Wagner Productions and produced a string of blockbusters, including the Mission: Impossible trilogy, Minority Report and War of the Worlds. Cruise/Wagner had a long-term production deal with Paramount. But last summer the relationship came to an acrimonious end when Sumner Redstone, chairman of Viacom, Paramount’s parent company, told the press the Cruise/Wagner contract would not be renewed. He blamed Mr Cruise’s “inappropriate behaviour”, an apparent reference to the actor’s support of Scientology and his energetic appearance on Oprah Winfrey’s television programme, when he jumped on a sofa to express his love for his fianc

Bryan Singer’s Second World War drama Valkyrie is on track to become the second large-scale US production this year after the Wachowski brothers’ Speed Racer to shoot at Germany’s Babelsberg Studios.Principal photography on the United Artists production about the 1944 plot to assassinate Hitler is expected to commence at the studios outside Berlin on July 19. Tom Cruise is being lined up to play Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg in a cast which already reportedly includes Kenneth Branagh, Armin Mueller-Stahl and Daniel Bruhl. The fact that the production will be coming to Babelsberg next month was underscored by the fact that a Berlin casting agency is organising a casting call this coming weekend (June 16 and 17) in Berlin for male extras aged 18-50 to play German soldiers in the historical drama. Moreover, a spokeswoman at the Babelsberg Studios confirmed to the German daily newspaper Die Welt that talks are currently underway between the US producers for the studio to come onboard the project as a co-producer. This would then make it possible for Valkyrie to access local production funds in the same way as Speed Racer. The Wachowski action film, which has been structured as a German-UK co-production between two single purpose vehicles – Babelsberg Sechste Film and Velocity Productions – was able to tap Euros 9m support from the recently created German Federal Film Fund (DFFF) and has also submitted a funding application to the German Federal Film Board (FFA) and FFF Bayern. The Babelsberg Studios are also set to host Stefan Ruzowitzky’s family entertainment Lilly The Witch (Hexe Lilli) and Jaco van Dormael’s Mr Nobody later this year. {nl}Source: Screen Daily
