Tom will become an honorary citizen of Busan, officials of the South Korean city announced Tuesday.
“The visit of a top star and director will contribute to promoting Busan’s important status in Asia for cinema,” said a city official. “The city has decided to award the honorary citizenship to Mr. Cruise in recognition to his contribution to the industry.”
Busan has been the home to Korea’s — and Asia’s — largest annual film festival and is becoming an increasingly popular production site for both domestic and international films, but this will be the first time a red carpet premiere is being held there for a foreign movie outside of the festival period.
Tom had requested to meet Korean fans — who affectionately call him “friendly Uncle Tom” — outside of Seoul, and Busan thus decided to host the premiere. The event will mark the 50-year-old’s sixth visit to Korea and his first to a city other than the capital.
The Jack Reacherteam will meet with local press in Seoul on Thursday before heading down for the premiere in Busan later that evening. The action film, about a homicide investigator, will open in Korean theaters on Jan. 17.

After directing Tom in Jack Reacher, Christopher McQuarrie is poised to take on the next installment of Cruise’s signature tentpole. It is said that McQuarrie is the choice to helm the fifth Mission: Impossible film that is in the early stages of being put together by Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions. They will hire writers before making it official, but he’s the guy that Tom and JJ Abrams want.
M:I-5 is a big priority for the studio after the Brad Bird-directed Mission: Impossible- Ghost Protocol grossed just under $700 million worldwide. McQuarrie, who won the Oscar for scripting The usual Suspects, has more recently become Tom’s go-to guy as a writer. After collaborating with Cruise onValkyrie, McQuarrie has had a credited or uncredited hand in most of Tom’s recent films including All You Need Is Kill, Ghost Protocol (uncredited), and the Top Gun 2 film which is in limbo after the death of director Tony Scott. Paramount and Skydance also have McQuarrie developing to direct Without Remorse, the action thriller based on the Tom Clancy novel.
The Impossible opportunity comes off the excitement that Paramount and Skydance are experiencing over Jack Reacher, which McQuarrie directed after adapting the script from the Lee Child novel One Shot.

Several sources tell PEOPLE in this week’s cover story that Tom’s rigorous film commitments – which he made well before his ex, filed for divorce ans sole custody on June 29 – have presented an exceptional challenge in terms of seeing Suri.
“I’ve got to see her,” an emotional Cruise told a friend recently. “I miss her.”
With Suri now based full time in New York City, where Holmes enrolled her in Manhattan’s private Avenues school, she has far less flexibility to visit him on set than under her previous home-school arrangement. Several sources say that a planned visit to London in mid-September was called off.
Still, the newly minted first-grader is a fixture in her father’s life, speaking with him several times a day.
“I can tell you that I haven’t had a meeting with Tom that was not interrupted by a phone call with his daughter,” says his friend, screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie.

Actress Lea Thompson tweeted this picture of she and Tom together on the set of “All the Right Moves,” which was filmed in Johnstown, Pennsylvania in 1983. In addition, two Johnstown high schools recreated the football game that is the centerpiece of the iconic film, in honor of the 30th Anniversary. Unfortunately, due to his filming commitments, Tom was unable to attend, but did send his best wishes.
